About Protein

What it is
Protein powders are concentrated protein from milk (whey) or plants such as pea, rice, fava bean, soy or seeds. Whey concentrate is about 70–80% protein, isolate about 85–90%, and hydrolysate is pre-digested whey. Plant proteins naturally take up more lead and cadmium from soil than whey.
Common forms
Whey concentrate (WPC), whey isolate (WPI), whey hydrolysate, single-source plant isolates (pea, fava) and plant blends; unflavoured or flavoured (sweeteners, thickeners, flavourings).
Typical label doses
Labels in our directory use 12.7–40 g scoops giving about 10–32 g of protein. There is no heavy-metal limit specific to protein powder in EU or UK law, so we compare against the EU food-supplement limits and, per serving, the strict California Prop 65 levels (lead 0.5 µg, cadmium 4.1 µg a day).

Which protein powder has the lowest heavy metals?

In our reports, whey. Nine of the 10 Lab verified whey proteins had lead, cadmium and mercury all below the lab’s reporting limit. The lowest limits are on SFD Nutrition WPC 80 Pure Protein and Hero Pro Whey Protein Isolate (lead <0.010, cadmium <0.0010, mercury <0.0010, arsenic <0.010 mg/kg; J.S. Hamilton Poland, 2026). The one whey with measured values, Puori PW1, had lead 0.0083 and cadmium 0.0237 mg/kg (calculated by us from per-serving results; mercury and arsenic not detected).

Which vegan protein powders had the lowest cadmium?

Power Supplements Fava Bean Protein Isolate (<0.010 mg/kg, below the reporting limit; NutriControl, Sep 2026), AHO.BIO Sprouted Protein, rice + pea (0.011 mg/kg; GBA, Nov 2025), Form Nutrition Pureblend (0.0117 mg/kg; ALS UK, Feb 2025) and Power Supplements Pea Protein Isolate (0.014 mg/kg; NutriControl, Sep 2026). The highest were edubily Vegan Protein, rice + pea (0.10 mg/kg; GBA, Sep 2026) and Sunday Natural Organic Protein 12K (0.085 mg/kg; GBA, Apr 2026). All are far below the EU food-supplement limit of 1.0 mg/kg.

Why does rice protein tend to carry more cadmium?

Rice plants take up cadmium from the soil more readily than many other crops, and plant proteins in general pick up more lead and cadmium from soil than whey. In our reports, the two highest cadmium results are both rice-containing blends: edubily Vegan Protein (rice + pea, 0.10 mg/kg) and Sunday Natural Organic Protein 12K (0.085 mg/kg). It is not automatic: AHO.BIO Sprouted Protein, also rice + pea, measured 0.011 mg/kg. Lead follows a different pattern in our reports: the highest values are pea isolates (vit4ever 0.071, HSN Pea Protein Isolate 2.0 0.055 and OstroVit Pea Protein Isolate 0.049 mg/kg), not the rice blends (0.021 and 0.033 mg/kg, and <0.020 for Sunday Natural 12K).

What does “below the reporting limit” mean on a lab report?

A result such as “<0.010 mg/kg” means the lab looked for the metal but the amount was too small to measure reliably at that level; the true value is somewhere between zero and 0.010 mg/kg. The lower the limit, the more the report tells you. SFD WPC 80 reports lead <0.010 mg/kg, while WAM Protein Pure Vanilla reports lead <0.5 mg/kg, a limit 50 times higher that could still allow about 15 µg of lead per 30 g serving; that is why WAM is listed as Unverified (reporting limits too high). “ND” (not detected) without a printed limit tells you less, and “Not tested” means the metal is not on the report at all.

How does CleanAssay calculate cost per 25 g of protein?

Every measured result in our protein list is far below the EU supplement limits.
