About Magnesium Glycinate

What it is
Magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine (also called bisglycinate).
Common forms
Powder or capsules. Pure magnesium bisglycinate is about 14% elemental magnesium by weight (real raw materials are usually 10–12%). A label or lab figure clearly above 14% cannot come from bisglycinate alone and usually means cheaper magnesium oxide (about 60% magnesium) has been mixed in, sold as “buffered”.
Typical label doses
Labels in our directory give 110–360 mg elemental magnesium a day: 2–4 capsules, or 1–3 g of powder. The EU/UK nutrient reference value for magnesium is 375 mg a day.

FAQ

Which magnesium glycinate has the lowest heavy metals?

CLN Labs Magnesium Bisglycinate Capsules (UK): lead 0.007, cadmium <0.001, arsenic 0.005 and mercury <0.005 mg/kg (Eurofins UK, UKAS, batch 202505048, Dec 2025), the lowest measured values in our list. VitaMoment and MoleQlar capsules had all four metals below GBA’s reporting limits (lead <0.020, cadmium <0.010, mercury <0.010, arsenic <0.040 mg/kg), and HSN powder had all four below AGROLAB’s limits (lead <0.020, cadmium <0.020, mercury <0.010, arsenic <0.020 mg/kg). GymBeam powder had lead, cadmium and mercury below the limit, but arsenic was not tested. Nature Heart (lead 0.023) and Inner Sparkle (lead 0.017 mg/kg) had measurable lead, still more than 100 times below the EU limit of 3.0 mg/kg.

Why does the 14% elemental magnesium figure matter?

Magnesium bisglycinate is one magnesium atom bound to two glycine molecules, so pure bisglycinate is only about 14% magnesium by weight; real raw materials are usually 10–12% because of moisture and free glycine. A product that declares or measures clearly more than 14% cannot be bisglycinate alone. The usual reason is that cheaper magnesium oxide (about 60% magnesium) has been mixed in, often sold as “buffered”. You can check a label yourself: elemental magnesium ÷ weight of the compound. Nature Heart, for example, gives 360 mg magnesium from 3,000 mg bisglycinate = 12%. We did not list products that declare or measured above 14% (one measured 18.4%, another declares 20%).

Which lab-tested magnesium glycinate can I buy from a UK seller?

Only one lab-verified product has a UK seller: CLN Labs Magnesium Bisglycinate Capsules (clnlabs.co.uk), £8.99 for 120 capsules, about £0.30 a day at 4 capsules (calculated, checked 18 Oct 2026). We found no UK-sold magnesium glycinate powder with an independent report we could open: Peak Supps (UK) is listed as Unverified because it only has a supplier certificate. The six EU products have no UK seller on file, so check delivery and any import charges if you order from the UK.

Where can I buy lab-tested magnesium glycinate in the EU or Spain?

HSN (Spain) sells the 500 g bisglycinate powder (€25.19, about €0.15 a day at 3 g). From Germany and Slovakia: GymBeam powder (€12.95 for 250 g, out of stock when checked), Inner Sparkle (€17.95 for 120 capsules), MoleQlar (€19.90), VitaMoment (€19.97) and Nature Heart (€19.60 on sale). Prices were checked on 18 Oct 2026 and can change.

Which lab-verified magnesium glycinate is cheapest per day?

Calculated at each label’s daily dose, prices checked 18 Oct 2026. EU sellers: GymBeam powder €0.05–€0.10 (1–2 g, 110–220 mg magnesium; out of stock), HSN powder €0.15 (3 g, 330 mg), Inner Sparkle €0.30 (2 capsules, 300 mg), MoleQlar €0.33 (2 capsules, 225 mg), VitaMoment €0.33 (2 capsules, 240 mg) and Nature Heart €0.65 (4 capsules, 360 mg). UK seller: CLN Labs £0.30 (4 capsules, 308 mg). Daily doses differ, so compare the magnesium per day as well as the price. We never convert between € and £.

Capsules or powder: which is cleaner?

In our reports both can be very clean. The powders (HSN, GymBeam) are the cheapest per day and have no capsule shell; the capsules are easier to dose. Five of the six capsules contain only bisglycinate and an HPMC (plant cellulose) shell; MoleQlar also contains MCT oil as a carrier. HSN and GymBeam powders are single-ingredient.

What can magnesium do, according to the law?

The authorised EU and UK health claims for foods that are at least a source of magnesium include: magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to normal muscle function, to normal functioning of the nervous system, to normal psychological function and to electrolyte balance. These claims are about magnesium in general, not a specific brand. This is not medical advice: if you take medicines or have a health condition, ask a pharmacist or doctor before taking a supplement.

What red flags should I check on a magnesium glycinate report?

Fillers such as microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, rice flour, maltodextrin or inulin (seven shortlisted products were left out for fillers or oxide padding); elemental magnesium above 14%; arsenic not tested (GymBeam powder); batch codes that do not match (GymBeam’s two reports differ by one character); a sample marking instead of a batch number (Nature Heart); magnesium not measured on the finished product (CLN Labs, Inner Sparkle, HSN); and old reports (HSN’s is from August 2025). Every product page lists its red flags.

Is there a legal heavy-metal limit for magnesium supplements?

Yes. Food supplements in the EU must stay under the 2023/915 maximum levels: lead 3.0, cadmium 1.0 and mercury 0.10 mg/kg; Great Britain applies the same levels for supplements. There is no specific EU limit for arsenic in supplements. Every measured result in our magnesium list is far below these limits; the highest measured lead is 0.023 mg/kg (Nature Heart).
